I'd look for the newest, lowest mile bike you can find used locally in the $2000 range. Buy a good helmet and jacket, do NOT buy any accessories for it. Keep it below 750ccs, looking at bikes like the Rebel 250, an older Rebel 400, the Suzuki Savage/ S40 650cc, the Shadow, the Kawasaki Vulcan 500, the Shadow 600, and other bikes like that.
1985 Honda Rebel 250. Starts and runs well. I restored this bike after someone tried to make it into a "bobber". Many new parts including: rear fender, front and rear sprocket, ignition, fuel cap, steering lock, battery, chain, etc. Carb was rebuilt and fuel tank was sealed with POR-15. Bike runs well, has good compression.
If you are eying up a 250, I would recommend a Suzuki GZ250, or a VStar250. These are actually 249cc's while the rebel is 234cc's. This can mean the difference between cruising and winding it out on the interstate. But unless you got your bike for pure fuel economy as a commuter, I would recommend the 500.
This 2007 Honda Rebel, 250cc. six speed motorcycle is in mint condition. It is a pearl white color with super low miles (5,080). This motorcycle provides great commuter transportation for an experienced or beginner rider. Move up from a small cc twist and go scooter to a real motorcycle! It get's about 75 mpg.
This Yamaha V-Star 250 review gives an accurate account of the old work pony. Yamaha V-Star 250 Review. It’s surprising to find a V-Twin engine on the old Virago / V-Star. This separates it from Suzuki’s Marauder 250, Suzuki’s TU 250, and Honda’s Rebel, and makes it stand among the KYMCO Venox and Hyosung Aquila.
